One link to rule them all: the annual best links of the year 2008 edition from Jason Kottke. Even though his site is a must in my daily webroutine, I have missed a few of these precious findings, here’s one of them: Chicago’s The Wiener Circle, a restaurant where name-calling, racial slurs and sexually charged verbal hate are celebrated “much to the delight of the patrons, the heavily tipped workers, and the owners.” Get ready to kill a few hours of productivity. •
TED conferences are part of my regular webroutine. I try to watch a few per week; topics that don’t strike me as exciting at first often turn out to be, if well spoken, fascinating and thought provoking. Here are three presentations I recently watched that are all worth every minute of your time: 1) NY chef and restaurants/farm owner Dan Barber tells a surprising [and mouth-foaming] parable of ethically made foie gras; 2) Author and Harvard Scholar Samantha Power recalls the life and work of Sergio Veira de Mello, the skilled UN diplomat “who worked with the world’s worst dictators”, fighting for people’s rights till the very end; 3) and for those who, like me, are fascinated by smells: I loved this vulgarization of the science of scent as told by biophysicist and architect of perfumes Luca Turin. •

Après la nécrologie de Steve Jobs, voici maintenant que l’on retrouve encore des articles du futur sur Internet. Un article sur une des missions spatiales Chinoises dès plus importantes depuis de l’aire spatiale Chinoise a été publié avec les commentaires des astronautes sur le déroulement du lancement. Le lancement est prévu pour demain.

Battle of the portfolio sites: who copied who? iamher.net vs faub.org. Dommage qu’il n’y a pas de date de fabrication imbriquée à même le script, parce qu’ils sont tout les deux identiques. Trop identique. •
Pour Jeff, Olivier, Toine, Patrick… et tous ceux intéressé à la réflection dérrière un site web, son contenu, son développement et son déploiement: Dan Hill explique de façon über-exhaustive le travail de transfert de la version papier du magazine Monocle au web et le développement du contenu propre au médium, complémentant l’expérience et le contenu mensuel. «Early sketches, outlines of strategic thinking and some insights into decision-making, tool choices and design practice.» Et exhaustif, c’est peu dire. Pour les non-initié à un processus de design, ça vaut la peine d’y jeter un coup d’oeil, c’est tout plein de good-design thinking. •

He explains it all starting way back from the Napster days to the very recent fall of Oink. “The beauty of Oink was how fans willingly and hyper-efficiently took on distribution roles that traditionally have cost labels millions of dollars. Music lovers have shown that they’re much more willing to put time and effort into music than they are money. It’s time to show artists that there’s no limit to what an energized online fanbase can accomplish, and all they’ll ever ask for in return is more music. And it’s time to show the labels that they missed a huge opportunity by not embracing these opportunities when they had the chance.” •
